Spiralism

Spiralism is a set of perceptions: (1) Reality is spiraling in complexity. (2) History does not repeat, but it comes pretty damn close. It spirals. (3) Tendencies repeat while actualities are fundamentally unique. (4) We are the immortal universe choosing our own, and its own, future every moment of our lives. (5) Evolution is not a function of random factors, but rather involves conscious, self-selected changes by the evolving entities themselves. (6) The difference between evolution and revolution is the difference between a spiral and a circle. Note that, to those with limited perspective, a circle and a spiral are identical (their narrow vision means they only see an arc) and, thus, close-minded people often mistake evolution for revolution and vice-versa.

From another direction, spiralism is a philosophy or religion (if you choose to call the universal consciousness of which we are all fragments "God") that tries to fuse western rationality and eastern spirituality. There is a place in spirituality for skepticism, logic and critical analysis else we'd all be scientologists (ugh). There is a place in reason for idealism and love for what good are right answers if the questions are uninspired?

And Spiralism is unfinished, as it must be, for the ideas related to it drift outward into the macrocosm and inward into the microcosm of existence. If you look close, you see that the lines of the spiral are, themselves, made of up smaller spirals and the same is true of the lines of the smaller spirals and so on. And you look up and realize the big spiral you were focused on is, itself, part of an arc of some much larger spiral. And the mind boggles. But that's okay. Spiralists cultivate and appreciate the boggled mind.

Note at the outset that I said spiralism is a set of perceptions. This is distinct from a set of beliefs. You cannot take spiralism on faith. Either you perceive the above statements to be true from your own observation of reality or you are not a spiralist. Using faith as the foundation for your most fundamental ideas about reality is akin to using butter as the foundation for a house. You can probably do worse, but nothing readily comes to mind.

No, wait, that analogy sucks. On second thought, it's like using house-building as an analogy for philosophical thought...it sounds good in theory, but just ends up as a pile of crap.

God, that's even worse. Hmm...maybe it's like trying to dust your house with a handful of dirt? That sends the right message, but it's way too obvious to be clever. Might as well say its like trying to tie your shoes with a device specifically designed to prevent successful shoe-tying (patent pending).

Okay, now I've got it. It's like following a map that simply has the word "here" scrawled on a blank piece of paper. You may be sure you've arrived, but how do you know if it's really where you want to be?

Damn, I think these are getting worse, not better. Time to throw in the towel. Fuck you, faith. You may have won the battle, but the war is not over. You are weak, like the air. Without substance. Hell, the only reason I can't hammer you into the ground is because you are so intangible that there's nothing to pound.

Is that a good analogy? Is it even an analogy? I really can't tell anymore. I've burned out my "sucky analogy" sensor. But since I haven't been writing about spiralism for a good long while, I can comfort myself that few people are actually going to be reading this rambling crapfest.
